Horsens statsfængsel

The present Horsens State Prison, formerly called Horsens penitentiary, became operational in 1853. Horsens State Prison is intended for prisoners serving long prison sentences. The prisoners spend only the nights in their cells on day work convicts in prison "workshops" in the evening, they freely move around the departments. The prison closed in 2006, and the prisoners were moved to state prison on Jutland Enner Mark.

For more than 150 years ago, specifically on 20 May 1853, rose 40 men from Viborg to Horsens, where they would live the next years of their lives.

Their journey was not entirely voluntary.

The men were in tugthusfanger from Viborg Prison, which was to become the first prisoners in the new but not quite finished, jail in Horsens, later called the state prison in Horsens.

Only three of the prison's planned four wings was built finished on 20 May The last wing, east wing, built convicts completed during the first year.
